1. Where do you live?
Japan
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
I got a news from somewhere when you released the CD called "Planet X" as your solo production.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
26. School teacher teaching English/amateur composer
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
No. So plz do a couple of gigs in Japan, not only in Tokyo. I live in Nagoya.
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
That's nice, plus, when you release, adding solo time of every member of Planet X would be cool! (Like LFO) Furthermore, jamming with no title would be cool!!
By the way, do you have any plans to release PX's VHS or DVD?
Thanks,
Tadashi Goto

1. Guelph, Ontario, Canada. I'm moving this summer to Kingston to attend Queens University to study Music. Afterwards, I'll be finishing up my degree at Berklee, then moving out to Los Angelas. (Yes, I have a life plan!) smile.gif
2. A friend of mine sent me an mp3 for "Chocolate" and I was stunned. I tried to find Universe everywhere, but when I was in Seattle over the Christmas holidays, I found it. Unfortunately, I got really sick on that trip and I didn't leave my house when I got back for about 10 days. This gave me chance to become immersed in the cd, and needless to say, I was glad I got sick.
3. I'm 18 and a student.
4. Not yet, but hopefully on the Moon Babies tour.
5. I think it can be both a good and bad thing. If track listings are mixed up between releases, then it's definately a great thing. One idea is to do a live cd and then after the next studio album, release a live dvd.

1. Where do you live?
Detroit for the last two years, although I'm originally from England.
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
I've been a big fan of Dream Theater since 1992, so I know about all their side projects and what old members get up to.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
I'm 30, and since I moved to the USA I'm a full time dad, although I do plan to work eventually!
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
Nope, I'm afraid not. I would certainly like to though!
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
Hey, if the record company allows it, go for it! Most fans are of the opinion that any new material is worth getting, even if it is a live album. Plus, for fans that didn't get to see the band live on the current tour, it provides a good snapshot, and possibly the best representation they could have without actually being there.

1. I live in Denmark
2. I am the #1 Virg fan in the world so checking out Planet X was quite obvious!
3. I am 25 Years old and I work at the Percussion Center in Copenhagen, selling drums!
4. No I have never seen You guys in action YET!!!, "only" Virgil solo twice!
5. I think it is a good idea to record a lot of live material and ofcourse release it, if the material lives up to Your supremely high standards! Not just release it for the fun of it!
(The LFO is absolutely stunning...)Keep up the good work, we really appreciate it!!!

2. How did you find out about Planet X?
I knew you from DT, so checking out the first CD was a no-brainer.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
I'm 24 and I work as an editor for a videogame (print) magazine.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
No, but I hope I will some time soon smile.gif
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
Depends on how much you change the material when playing live. I don't really care for note-perfect renditions of tunes as they are on the CD. When there's some improvisation and possibly some new parts added, I'm interested in all official live documents from bands that I like.
Thanks,

You're welcome!

I live in a city called Brighton, on the south coast of England. IMO the best part of the UK!
When you joined Dream Theater, I started finding out what other stuff you did, which led me to Planet X (like a lot of others). I first got your solo CD, Planet X, loved it, and it started there.
25 years old, and I am a "global information co-ordinator" for Alamo car rentals!! That basically means I make sure their records are up to date. It sucks!
I've never Planet X live, but it's no exaggeration when I say Planet X is the band I most want to see play live.
I'm a sucker for anything produced by bands I like. I'd buy a live performance of anything by Planet X, so I'd love a Live CD to be released after every album.

1. Stockholm, Sweden
2. Iīm a big fan of Brett Garsed, so I probably got the news of the first cd from his site. I really like Tonyīs playing also, so the lineup change wasnīt really too bad a thing...
3. 23 yrs. I Study "media engineering" at a local school and record my own music whenever time allows me to.
4. Havenīt seen PlanetX live, but I saw you with DT back in ī96 on the Awake tour...
5. I like the idea of releasing a live album after every studio album, as long as it doesnīt delay a new studio product for too long...
Btw. Congrats on the Clavia sponsorship! I assume you are checking out the "electro" series as well?

4. Yes I have, twice actually.
5. After every studio release would be cool, but I would prefer if it was after every other studio release so you can throw more shit onto the live albums at a time and not have stuff that's way older show up since those might already be on a live album already. It would be cool to hear some of your solo stuff show up on there too.

1. Where do you live?
Thessaloniki, Greece
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
it wasn't difficult at all - i knew you very well as a musician and so as soon as you released a personal album through Magna Carta i bought it immediately. Moreover i am a huge fan of Tony's music and i guess that the rest is very easy to guess.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
23 and just finishing my higher studies in economics.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
OF COURSE. 2 times.
1st one on the 23rd of May 2000 in Vlissingen, Holland (1st European gig for the band) where we also put your keyboards stand together and we were backstage after the show eating having fun ... 2nd one on the 26th of October 2001 in Sofia, Bulgaria where you had for the first time a young bass player (same age with me) that i forget his name right now (i am sorry) but who was really a great guy.
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
I think that it is a great idea. I can say for sure that you are the best band i have ever watched playing live - the first time that i saw you (in 2000) i had catched just in 9 months Steve Vai, Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Billy Cobham and Planet X was the only one that SHOCKED ME (there is no way that i will ever forget Virgil's solo).

2. Derek, I actually I hang out with you several times on your DT FII tour in Germany in '98 and before that in '97 just before you went into the studio. I've been a fan of yours since I first heard you play on the Awake tour so it was only natural to check out your Planet X solo album back in the daze...
3. I'm 23 and a student of political science and economics.
4. Come to Germany and I'll see you live!!! Last time I saw Virg and Tony was Vai in Munich last December.
5. I don't know. IMO it only makes sense if you have a lot of diversity on the live albums. People tend to get tired of them otherwise.

2. How did you find out about Planet X?
Through checking out what you were up to solo wise.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
Im 22...23 in less than a month. Im a student/artist/musician/begining independant film maker.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
No unfortunately. Found out about the show here about 2 months after it had gone.
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
If there has been a tour following a studio release then I think a live album would be great. It all depends on what the fans demands are. If a tour for an album is great, then fans will probably want some sort of release. Even if its including live tracks on singles or EP's.

I'm not a fan, I think live records should have a diverse amount of material. I'm a big fan of Rush's method on that:4 studio then 1 live. I think that's a good ratio.

1. Where do you live?
I'm now living in Porto Alegre, Brazil but am from Montreal, Canada and moving back there by 2003.
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
I first discovered you with ACOS and soon after FII was released. Kevin Moore and DT were the ones introducing me to keyboards-land and after FII, I fell in love with that more "atmospheric" keyboard-style.... anyways, after learning you were out of DT, I was one of the first to jump on your solo album and just totally LOVED your songwriting team/duo with Virgil.... the rest is history. By the way, I hope to hear more songs written just by you and Virgil on your future solo releases...
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
I'm now 26 and I'm a musician, bartender, teacher (guitar, language) and webmaster.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
Yes. Being in Hannover, Germany for the World Expo 2000, I tried Everything to go see PX in Holland but it didn't work out. So I had to wait to go back to Canada and I could finally see you guys at the Montreal Drum Fest in the end of 2000. Was totally AWESOME!!
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
Seeing the way the bootleg industry goes, it's the perfect thing to do nowadays. Cool suggestions would be to release DVDs as well and include live bonus video tracks on the live CDs.

4. No :( ...but you know I will as soon as you're in the area!
5. that would depend on the material...how much would be "new" material that had not been recorded/released live...how much would be more improvised stuff that maybe came from soundchecks...make it really worth buying each time, and I'm all for it...in general I LOVE live albums!

to tell you the truth i wouldnt be too supportive of this. I prefer studio albums and live shows but not really live cds. A dvd would be a better idea. Also, continually releasing live albums after studio cds would become too repetative, since they would be the same songs.

First of all, jordan kicks serious ass. i would not by any means say that dream theater has declined, but has probably improved. it's a style completely different than when derek was in the band, but it still rocks. i will have to say that the best dt song was "a change of seasons".

A label-released live CD after ever studio release is overkill - band sanctioned "official bootlegs" would be a better idea, perhaps.

1. I live in the great Quebec City, Canada.
2. I probably heard about PX while looking in the Magna Carta booklets that came with my newly bought Liquid Tension Experiment 2 CD. Then I searched for Dream Theater Stuff and made the links.
3. I'm a 19-year-old student and hobbyist drummer for the Liquid Tension Tribute band "Hollow Spirits"
4. I've seen Planet X live once at the Québec City gig at "Le Dagobert" on May 23rd 2001
5. I don't think the idea is that cool. I think it's better to have a Live CD after 2 or 3 albums and put a little bit of music from all previous albums.

2. How did you find out about Planet X?
I think I visited you page, or Tony Macalpine's page. Virgil's playing impressed me so much, as well as the futuristic appeal you gave to the music, all those crazy tones you get from your keyboard. Then I really turned out to be a PX fan.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
26, gratuated on data processing technology, right now studying to get a CISCO network certification. I also play the guitar and assemble and sell computers.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
Never. But I warned a friend of mine that used to live in San Diego and he went to the show. It was in a Carvin store (I'm a fan and proud owner of a Carvin guitar) He took pictures of all you guys and told me everything about the show. He turned out to be a great fan after this.
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
That's hard to say. As crazy as you are, it's probable that every live CD will have something very special on it. If that's not possible, maybe you could release 1 live cd for each 3 or 2 studio albums.

I'm from Cincinnati, lived here all my life.
I fount out about Planet X quite recently after having listened to the Platypus - Ice Cycles CD. I've had that CD for about a year, but just recently started delving deeper into Mr. Sherinian's work.
I'm 22 and right now I'm working for Mars Music here in Cincinnati. I'm the outside sales contact for the store and I work with live sound rentals and sales. I also handle sales for keyboards, recording, and in the past, Band and Orchestra.
I have not seen Planet X in concert, though if hat I've heard is any indication of how much I'm going to love this band, I look forward to the opportunity.
I love live material! Especially with talented musicians as in Planet X, the live shows have exciting spins on the music, and new solos that are even more virtuous that on the albums! Release 2 live albums for every CD! :D

I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada
I heard about Planet X from my brother, we both have similar tastes in music.
I am 40 years old and am a salesman for a Machine tool company.
I have not seen you in concert yet but if you make it to the west coast or even Calgary I most certainly will.
I think Live CD's are not neccesary after every studio CD.

Hi Derek! My name's Jesse Williams (LerxstKid@aol.com), and it's been great talking to you a few times online before. (I'm the one that's trying to get you guys to play @ Motor City Guitars here in MI.)
To answer the questions:
1. Where do you live?
Westland, MI- About 40 minutes west of Detroit.
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
I've been a long-time DT fan, and you've always been my favorite keyboard player, so when you made your solo PX album, I snatched it up and continued following your career afterward. Thanks to you and PX, I've also been introduced to Virgil and Tony's playing. Each of you is easily my favorite player on your respective instruments.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
I am 18 years old, a freshman Music Major @ Western Michigan University, and I plan to double major in jazz studies and composition. I play drums, guitar, bass, keyboards and sing, and I'm currently drumming in the instrumental jazz/rock/funk fusion band J.D. and the Pirates. I also give private drum lessons.
4. Have you ever seen Planet X in concert?
Ahhh, unfortunately no. I heard that you guys were coming to Detroit last year (The I-Rock Nightclub), but I think it was cancelled?!?!
Please come to SE Michigan on the coming tour! I'll be bringing a huge crowd to see you guys! :D
5. What is your opinion on releasing a live album after every studio album?
Well, if Live From OZ is any indication of future live albums to come, KEEP THEM COMING!!! LFO is easily my all-time favorite live album.....amazing!

2. A brazilian rock website annouced that Derek was going to release a solo album (a damn good album btw). Been following ever since.
3. 20. I'm a producer in a radio station.
4. Nope
5. Cool, even because live albums bring a lot of stuff that didn't make into the albums. It's also great for ppl who don't have the opportunity of attending concerts...
1. Good ole Massachusetts.
2. Loved you in Dream Theater and loved your solo work, so Planet X was a total no brainer.
3. 20. Working as a manager of a local cleaning company at the moment.
4. Not yet but I saw Virgil on this years G3 tour with Vai and he friggin smoked! Can't wait to see Planet X on this next tour!
5. Perhaps after every two albums would be better, the only exception would be if there was a lot of material not featured on the cd that was performed live. Also the band doing some improvs or extended jams on songs would be a great way to keep a yearly live album fresh and new!

Hey Derek!
1. Where do you live?
Holland, somewhere in the north.
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
As most people, I knew you through Dream Theater and downloaded the samples of your first solo release Planet X and was so impressed that I HAD to buy the CD. When I had that CD, I was even MORE impressed and when you and Virgil started Planet X as a band... It was the most obvious thing that you guys would be my new favorite band. :D
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
18, I am currently doing practically nothing. Kicked out of school a few times hehe
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
Yes once, when you guys where touring Europe with 9 gigs in Holland, I only went to see ONE... That was stupid, because I should've seen at least 5 or something. smile.gif
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
Well, Live CD's are very nice, especially when it's Planet X of course tongue.gif , but one after EVERY studio release would pretty much take away the fun of it... It would be the same like Dream Theater has been doing with there Scenes From New York... All those songs have been played so often and they go and release it live... *sigh*.
Maybe a Live CD after 2 or 3 studio albums would be nice.

I've heard that Live from Oz is very good, a live release after every studio release might be overkill. Let me think about that one.

Sydney, Australia. Originally from Macedonia.
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
Initially on Amazon.com, but I ignored it as a likely DT derivative/side project. I was then inspired by EER-MUSIC.com to seek out Inertia and Universe. I sampled Universe and put it back on the shelf as 'guitar hero music.' I bought Inertia & loved it. Then I saw Virgil live in Sydney with Frank Gambale & Ricci Fierabracci so I had to buy Universe, which has slowly but surely become one of my favourites.

I am a 45 year old fusionhead from florida and am a martial arts instructor. I discovered PlanetX while looking through some prog sites and downloaded some songs from winmx.I was so impressed i went out and bought all of their CD's (so much for file sharing being evil)Good high quality loud music is hard to come by but PlanetX fits the bill.Live albums to me get boring as it is the same stuff over and over, I suggest live albums of never to be released otherwise stuff.I would like for PlanetX to come to St. Pete FL.

1. Where do you live?
For the last 4 months - Montreal,QC, Canada
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
Phew, it was so long ago that I can't really remember. I guess it should've been through one of the DT newsletters.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
23, still figuring out what to do with my life. Though I'm a professional painter, welder/fitter ... also do 3D drafting and play mainly drums, occasionally guitar and keyboard.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
Twice, in Toronto and Montreal on the Universe tour. Drank beer and chatted with Derek for about 15-20 minutes before they played, and then after the show straight whiskey with Dave. That was cool guys, thanks.
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
Sure, the more material to listen to the better, as long as you're up for putting it out. Also that way the fans will get a chance to hear a fair amount of songs (live) from the most recent album. Or in other words you wouldn't have a hard time making the set list knowing that you've already covered and recorded those songs and can play the most recent ones. I think it makes sence.
btw, when were the Montreal and Burlignton shows :D ?

3. I am 17 years old, studying...Art and form, you could say, in english... But I like music better and began to play drums, resantly...
4. No, not yet, but I am looking forward to it, if it ever happens...
5. It's great! Because a live album is never the same as a studio. You can get cool solos and improvised parts and songs on live recordings.
You're doing a great job, all of you, there's just one thing - Come to Sweden... :D

1. Where do you live?
Arlington, Texas
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
By keeping track of Messrs. MacAlpine, Donati and Sherinian's careers through time.
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
I'm 37. Currently, I'm taking a break from journalism and earning my keep in a related field.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
No, but I saw Virgil in Steve Vai's band on G3; Derek at Dream Theater's "Falling Into Infinity" tour; and Tony several years ago at Dallas City Limits (toting his own gear!)
5. Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
Seems redundant, given the nature of band's music (ie: already much improvisional and instrumental dexterity on studio releases.) Still, any chance to hear Planet X - in whatever medium - I welcome with open ears.

Where do you live?
Saint Louis, Missouri
How did you find out about Planet X?
I've been following Virgil's career since 1994 & buying any cd or dvd he's played on since! Absolutely the most incredible drummer playing today! Also, while i've never cared much for "DT" I loved your playing Derek & watched where you'd end up after your great decision to "move on"!
How old are you, and what is your profession?
I'm an old geezer, 50, & I've been a professional musician(drummer-pls no jokes here;-> ;) since I began playing in Niteclubs whilst still in High School, and continue to play out constantly, today!
Have you seen Planet X in concert?
Sadly, i've never gotten the opportunity to do so, but intend to correct that this year, by driving to Planet X's closest concert which I believe is Addision Il.(Pls don't cancel out!!)
Your opinion on releasing a live cd after every studio release?
Since I generally enjoy "live" recordings more than studio recordings, because then you KNOW that the musicians truly have the chops to pull off complicated studio songs, in a "live" setting,
I love the idea! Btw Derek, if you truly read all this, I want you to know I was 1 of the lucky
"few" who bought the "Live-RAW-3 cd pack' you autographed & dated through Audiophile Imports! For "PX" fans that don't know about this, Derek recorded Planet X on 3 different nites, from the "Baked Potato" in Hollywood(twice)5/29/00 & 8/25/00 and 1 at the Musicians Institute also in Hollywood on 5/17/01. These are 3 gems, collectors
items; as there are NO OVERDUBS, & the band just kills! So for Derek or anyone out there that might
know, Exactly how many of these 3 packs were made?
Finally, Planet X must do a dvd so us fanatics, have a keepsake of the band's "Live Virtousity'!! ;)

5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
I think it's gets boring and repetitve
, in my opnion it would be much more exciting and better to release a live album after a couple of records (or maybe more) so the setlist would be greater, and you could turn it into a 2cd album o even a dvd

OK, now I get to ask you all some ANSWERS.
1. Where do you live?
Orange County, CA
2. How did you find out about Planet X?
Through Dream Theater. I asked myself, who the hell is rocking like that on the keyboards. Looked up more info on you and found Planet X. This is a recent discovery, but been loving it!
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
22. Currently a student at a local university and work as an accountant to pay the bills. Just a back up if rockstardom doesnt pay off.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
No. Just missed you! Not sure if it was just Derek solo, or planet x, but someone just came to the Coach house. Was mad to miss that show in LA, one with Spock's.
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
Either or. Its always nice to know if you missed the concert, you can go hear it on cd (not even close to the same thing.) But sometimes, it can be an overdone thing. ;)

4. No, but if you ever came to Sweden, you can bet I'd be there!
5, I think it's a good idea, as it proves that you can actually play all those 15/16ths live. Just keep the number of live releases down, or else you'll become another Phish or King Crimson with thousands of live albums...how about doing the live recording before releasing the album, so that the disc comes as a double album, one live and one studio disc?

Our drummer practicaly lives at the Drum Pad in Palatine. He mentioned the show, and we were fans of T.J.'s. I began listening to your CD's to get prepared for the show, and fell in love with your music!
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
Old fart of 52, but still rocking. Besides selling expensive furniture, I manage, record, engineer, produce, and promote my husband's band, REDSHIFT. We gave T.J. some CD's after your concert the other night, and a copy was for you to enjoy.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert? Palatine, and you guys ROCKED!
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
As someone who records strictly live, I think that every performance is different with Prog/Fusion music. That's part of the spontaneity in this genre of music. I could record a song 20 times, and it will have something special each time I capture it. Yes! You can never have too many recordings live!
It was fate, that we met our new drummer, and he turned us on to Planet X. I never would have made this wonderful discovery on my own. As soon as I heard Moon Babies, I knew that it would blow away my husband, too. We can't get enough. He has been listening to OZ, and loves it! I studied keys as a teen, and my biggest influence was The Five Bridges Suite by Keith Emerson. You will trigger such passion in the new wave of young musicians, too!

2. How did you find out about Planet X?
- Found you via Dream Theater when you joined. Found PX as soon as it existed. Would have found out anyway, since you have harvested (and continue to do so) some of my favorite musicians (Ric, Virgil, Garsed, Helmerich, Tony... everyone has been awesome, but I've been listening to the last 3 of those guys for over a decade and a half).
3. How old are you, and what is your profession?
- 26, and I'm a musican/instructor.
4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?

5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
- As long as something seperates the live album from the studio release, like besides just a good performance, I'd need some incentive to buy a live album for every studio album. But Helmerich and Virgil together is a pretty good incentive for me. tongue.gif

4. Have you seen Planet X in concert?
No, I havenīt but I would like to. Especially now when TJ is onboard.
5, Your opinion on releasing a Live CD after every studio release.
Itīs always a great idea to do that. Even though I didnīt care too much for the last one. This was mainly because Tony isnīt a very good live performer. But I have faith in TJ now and all of you other guys are truely great musicians.
A live CD would also make the band strive even harder for being a great live band. And this should be in everybodies concern. One should remember that this is a style of music that people is expecting to be played flawlessly. That is simply the way the music sounds best. And also, whatīs the point of being a band that plays live, unless they play great live?
However, I guess that most of the fans would be very interested in in a CD like that.
