View Full Version : outrageous song game

This is a game doing the rounds at some other forums, thought I'd see if it takes off here.

Someone says a band namd and song title, the next poster has to take one of the words used in the previous song title, and name another song which uses that word. no words like "of", "and" "the", etc, etc. It's just something to do when you visit the forum

So, the first post might look like:

Dream Theater - Another Day

Second post might go:

Derek Sherinian - Day In The Sun.

Ok, first one...

i always get frightened by that ton-heavy australian english accent on the beginning. i know this is not the case, but to my ears australien-english just sounds like the worst redneck-slang-english i could possibly imagine. its so damn funny. it almost makes bretts dvd's useless to me because i keep getting distracted by his pronounciation.

Have you not noticed how stupid Swiss people sound when they try to speak English then? They sound like they have an identity crisis - am I trying to sound British, American or both? And don't get me started on that ridiculous Swiss dialect of German - that dialect is the object of plenty of jokes in the Hochdeutsch world....etc.

I don't actually think that way, but that's an equivalent example of how you come across when you talk about Australians. You might want to watch how you convey yourself - you just might find people calling you a stuck-up Swiss prissy-boy...;)

swiss are among the worst english speakers anway. probably even on the top place. well, the asian people are maybe worse, don't know. its a head to head race i can imagine :-)

well, i know what you trying to say, but especially for avoiding this type of conversation i placed "i know this is not the case" in my sentence, so please give me some credit for that! :D

All of this got wondering. Do Americans have accents when we speak other languages? Like, for example, if I spoke German would the German listening to me know right away that I had an "American" accent?

yes, definitely. in my company here, we have a lot of guys from the US and everybody from austria to holland would know that you're from the US by your accent. Well, they have difficulties separating it from the australian accent but nobody thinks of australia around here when they hear english so they would expose you with ease :D

btw: most people can distinguish between british english and US english, but not between australian eng. and US eng., which i think is quite funny.

No, sorry, no credit for that - you put that there as a sneaky way of trying to make your opinion appear less strong, but it came through strongly anyway. Sorry, no credit, just debit...;)

@noble, yes, when I lived in Austria I could hear British and US accents in German very strongly. I often felt very complimented when people thought I was German because even though they could tell I wasn't an Austrian dialect speaker (I never tried to anyway) they assumed that I was from a German speaking country because my accent is the typical Hochdeutsch TV show accent. Americans have a lot of trouble getting the sounds right because they talk in a completely different place in their mouth, that always struggle with the vowels.

LOL, but an unfair comparison, Ando. Most people speaking in a foreign language will sound funny, but Grohm says that Aussies manage to sound funny speaking their native tongue. And in many cases he's right about that ;). What I don't think he's right about is that red-neck thing, because there are plenty worse accents for that, most of which can be found in the more mountainous and/or remote regions of the North American Continent...:D

And don't get me started on that ridiculous Swiss dialect of German - that dialect is the object of plenty of jokes in the Hochdeutsch world....etc.

Hahaha, that's so funny, and so true, too. I've always had trouble understanding the Swiss whenever I met them - mind you, that was usually on holiday in France or Spain, and we would usually all be quite inebriated...;). Then again, I find it hard to believe that Austrians can actually joke about the Swiss' German, as that whole Alpine region (with the obvious exception of urban regions - and even then!) mangles Hochdeutsch pretty badly - and in quite the same way.

By the way: kudos to both of you showing such capability of self-deprecating humour in this (off topic, as usual :D )conversation. Excellent, guys!

Yeah I know, I was being deliberately unfair to make a point. I think people need to realise that there is a lot more to being a redneck than having a funny accent. In the US many Ivy League educated Republicans would be considered rednecks for the views they hold much more than whether they had an accent or not. Conversely, Brett Garsed has a typical Aussie accent and he is a musical genius - the opposite of a redneck really. I find it amazing that somebody could get so fixated on an accent and what that signifies to them rather than listening to their great wisdom and knowledge. I mean, sure Scottish people sound a little funny, but it doesn't stop me listening to what they have to say the same way I would listen to anyone else. Even the example of a foreigner speaking English is relevant because if you let the way people talk get in the way of listening to them you would miss out on an awful lot of great conversations.

On the subject of accents - accents are broad, blunt manners of speech. Much more meaningful is the individual dialect - the idiolect, which is what every unique person brings to the way they speak. When you are really listening to a person, you don't hear the accent, you hear the idiolect. That is a sign that you are looking beyond the suferficiality of accents and really trying to channel into the persons entire set of communicative tools - emphasis, phrasing, melody, rhythm, vocabulary, body language, word choice, etc.

Anyway, sorry to ruin the mood with a serious post Moe, hope you don't mind.;)
